When you place yourself at the top you have a lot to lose. A man's identity was pretty much formed in social opinion by the behaviour of the woman he was supposedly in control of. So if a wife addressed him too familiarly in public, or wore too much makeup, or drank too much, let alone slept around, a man was emasculated.

I can't claim to really 'get' straight men overall when it comes to women, but I just can't take anything that AZ woman says very seriously.
Actually Sheena, I didn't write those words. Author Susan Squire (I Don't: A Contrarian History of Marriage) said them to me in an interview.
I recommend that book to all men.

What a load of self-serving crap. A man's identity is formed by his beliefs, goals, actions and accomplishments. A spouse may contribute to that identity, but she arrives on the scene long after it has been "formed".
There have been matriarchal societies in human history. There have even been female rulers, politically and corporately- queens, prime ministers, presidents and CEOs. The desire and attempt to control other human beings is not exclusive to the male gender.
Read the book, WN. I can't do justice to all her research in a 900-word edited version of a two hour phone conversation.
